Thought for Now - March 25, 2020
March 26, 2020, 10:21 AM

No need to panic, but Christmas is exactly nine months from today! No; I haven’t been thinking about shopping for gifts. At least not yet.

In the Christian calendar, today is the Feast of the Annunciation – the day we believe that the angel Gabriel announces that Mary would become the mother of Jesus. Maybe “announces” is not quite the right word for what happens in the interaction between Gabriel and Mary. Yes, Gabriel “announces” that Mary is the person chosen by God to bear God’s son, but the announcement will only work if Mary offers her “yes.” She does say “yet,” but Mary quite literally risks her life to say “yes” to God’s call. She risks stoning for being pregnant before marriage. She risks rejection from her family and friends.

The very birth of Jesus, our Savior, is only possible because of Mary’s “yes” to God’s call. Our very identity as Christians is only possible because of Mary’s “yes” to God’s call. Mary’s “yes” sets in motion a new phase in God’s relationship with humanity – a relationship we continue today as followers of Christ. What are we willing to risk by saying our “yes” to God?
