Songs of Liberation - Thought for the Week, 2/5/2020

Black History Month is observed and celebrated in February. During this month, we remember, acknowledge, and celebrate the lives, accomplishments, and legacies of people of African descent. Although we often call it our “new” hymnal, the technical name of the LEVAS hymnal is “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The hymnal is named for a poem-turned-hymn that is often considered a Black National Anthem: Lift Every Voice and Sing. This special hymn affirms the liberation of people of African descent, particularly in the end of US chattel slavery. What other songs speak to us of liberation?
